Set up your phone for distraction-free driving

A few minutes of setup keeps your attention on the road.

Turn on a Driving Focus, prepare auto-replies, choose who can still reach you, and set up voice and vehicle integrations before you leave — so your phone stays quiet and hands-free once you are moving.

Set it up before you go

  1. Open Settings → Focus and add a Driving focus (or Do Not Disturb While Driving).
  2. Set it to turn on automatically — when connected to car Bluetooth or CarPlay, or when motion is detected.
  3. Silence notifications so only allowed contacts and calls can reach you.

Auto-replies while you drive

  • “I’m driving right now and will reply when I’ve stopped.”
  • “On the road — I’ll get back to you shortly.”

Who can still reach you

  • Emergency contact — allowed to break through

If something can’t wait: If something genuinely needs your attention, find a safe place to pull over and come to a complete stop before using your phone.

Voice & vehicle — set up while parked

  • Apple CarPlay (while parked): Set your destination before departing.
  • Android Auto (while parked): Choose your route and audio before driving.
  • Siri (while parked): Configure voice shortcuts while parked.

Hands-free alternatives

  • Use voice control to send and hear messages hands-free.
  • Let a passenger handle navigation and messages.
  • Set your destination and playlist before you start driving.
