Why it matters

A successful authorization can still expire, be reversed, or fail during later capture.

Technical detail

Authorization checks a payment method and reserves or approves an amount subject to issuer and network rules; it does not by itself complete settlement.

Examples

  • A card issuer authorizes a $120 repair charge before work begins.
