The phone was announced to the public along with the Sony Xperia XZ1 at a press conference which was held at IFA 2017 on August 31, 2017. It is the successor to the Sony Xperia X Compact and the first flagship-grade compact smartphone from Sony since the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact. It is known as the SO-02K in Japan, where it is exclusive to the NTT Docomo carrier. -

It was the last phone in the Xperia XZ series and the last phone in the Xperia X series overall before Sony moved into a new naming scheme for their Xperia line-up. -

Xperia Z The Sony Xperia Z is an Android-based smartphone by Sony. Announced at CES 2013 the phone was officially released on 9 February 2013 in Japan and 1 March 2013 in Singapore and the UK. It was released in the U.S months later. The Xperia Z was initially shipped with the Android 4.1.2 operating system. The smartphone has Ingress Protection Ratings of IP55 and IP57. It also contains a 13.1 MP Exmor RS camera sensor, and the screen of the phone consists of a TFT 1920x1080 display, with 441 ppi. It would be the first smartphone in the Sony Xperia Z series, continuing all the way up to the Xperia Z5.

On 13 January 2014, the Sony Xperia Z1s, a modified version of the Sony Xperia Z1 exclusive to T-Mobile US, was released in the United States.

Like its predecessor, the Xperia Z2 tablet features a 10.1 inch screen and is water and dustproof with a rating of IP55 and IP58. The tablet is the lightest and thinnest 10.1-inch tablet, weighing at 1 pound and is 0.25 inches (6.4 mm) thick, the Z2 Tablet features the Snapdragon 801 processor, Sony's Triluminos display and HDR video recording. Unveiled alongside the Sony Xperia Z2 during the 2014 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, on February 24, it was first released on March 26, 2014 in the United Kingdom. On July 3, 2014, Sony launched its Xperia Z2 Tablet in India. -
