Score breakdown
Why this grade
Category gold standard. iFixit scored the Steam Deck LCD 7/10 and the Steam Deck OLED as high as 9/10. Valve partnered with iFixit to sell genuine first-party replacement parts and Fix Kits (shells, triggers, screens, batteries, daughterboards) plus official end-user repair instructions, runs on open Linux/SteamOS with no part pairing or serialization locks, and uses standard user-replaceable M.2 storage. Only meaningful deductions are the strongly glued-in battery and a charge port soldered to the motherboard. Highest official parts availability, best documentation, reasonable OEM pricing, and effectively zero software repair locks of any device in this category.
Methodology & version
Five dimensions — parts availability, schematic access, repairability, OEM pricing, and software freedom — are scored 0–100 and weighted equally; the letter grade is the average (A 90–100, B 80–89, C 70–79, D 60–69, F below 60). This assessment is current as of 6/9/2026 and cites its sources below. It covers the Game consoles category and is not a claim about every device the maker ships.
