Score breakdown
Why this grade
Most closed and least physically serviceable of the group. UniFi runs a proprietary controller-based firmware ecosystem; only older APs (e.g., UAP-AC) had practical OpenWrt installs, and recent UniFi firmware added flash write-protection and removed tooling, so OpenWrt now generally requires firmware downgrades/workarounds. SSH exists but is not an official repair/firmware path. Hardware is enterprise-style: APs are ceiling/wall-mounted, frequently sealed or clipped with internal (non-replaceable) antennas and PoE, with few iFixit guides; no published schematics and no official spare parts. Higher-cost ecosystem makes replacement less repair-favorable.
